 | Working With Stencils, Patterns, & Appliques | |
I love working with pattern! In fact, it is possibly number one in my three favorite components of faux design that also includes working with metallic's and texture! I have found that with todays more contemporary design trends, using the decorative element of pattern can set the tone of a finish easier than any other design tool or component out there! Whatever name they may be sold as: stencils, patterns, modello's, applique's, ez stick, multi or single use, dimensional or flat, they provide you with tools unmatched in ease of use, design possibilities, and look for time invested of any tool used in the industry today!
When designing a new finish to fit a particular trend, I do quite a bit of research to find just the right pattern - one that not only embellishes the finish but also integrates with it in a way that creates a unified whole rather than seperate parts layered together. At times, the stencil or pattern I find inspires the finish. At other times, the process reverses itself and the concept of the finish begs for a specific style of pattern to complete it.

This integrative way of designing finishes allows me to create unique artistic expressions in faux that please designer's, clients and students alike. Designers and their clients appreciate the custom and cutting edge looks not seen everywhere they turn. Students also appreciate those characteristics but even more they appreciate their marketability in these tough and competitive times and the excitement and interest the finishes create in a showing or presentation.
I use patterns and stencils from a variety of manufacturers and some of my favorite sources include Victoria Larsen Raised Plaster Stencils and Professional Raised Plaster Stencils, Raised Expectations, Royal Design Studio, the Stencil Library, Designer Stencils, Faux Effects, Loft 101, and Wallovers. Take a look at some of the finishes in the photo's below using decorative elements from some of these creative designers!
